Victorian Planning Training is a hub collecting the training courses provided by two of Victoria’s most experienced planning training providers, Cazz Redding (of Schemology) and Stephen Rowley (of RCI Planning).

We are both highly experienced planning educators. We have extensive experience providing training both through our own businesses, and through the Victorian Planning Institute’s Planet program. We have also both taught planning courses at universities.

We are also both recognised experts in Victorian Planning. Each of us has more than 25 years of experience in planning, with experience across statutory and strategic roles. We are therefore the ideal presenters to facilitate staff training that extends your staff’s existing knowledge. We also have a demonstrated dedication to working with councils.

Our approach

Our approach to training is built on the following principles:

  • Training needs to be carefully tailored based on an understanding of the needs and pre-existing knowledge of your group. We both have extensive experience teaching those new to the system and understand the common barriers to understanding. At the same time, however, we are both expert planners who can deliver content to expand the skills of even your senior staff.
  • The most effective training is closely planned with managers to allow opportunity for follow-up discussion about how that knowledge can be applied at the individual workplace. We work closely with those who commission training to understand what the key areas of focus should be. We are always eager to incorporate specific case studies relevant to your group.
  • Training should be planned to allow input from your in-house leaders; we want your senior staff sharing and contributing their knowledge. A good training session starts conversations which continue in the workplace after the session is complete.
  • Many of your staff are already planning experts. It is vital that they are trained by people who understand their existing level of knowledge and can extend it.
  • Training should be kept focussed and time efficient. Your staff’s time is valuable, and learning outcomes are reduced in long sessions. For more advanced and in depth content that requires more time, we suggest splitting sessions over several days where possible.
  • Council planning work has unique challenges that need to be understood by your training providers. We both have a long history of working in and for councils, and are dedicated to planning for the public interest.

All of our course descriptions should be considered a starting point – we are always willing to customise courses for particular sessions and audiences.

Looking to enrol as an individual?

Generally we undertake training at the request of managers or coordinators looking to provide in-house training for their staff (or other special groups, such as councillors).

We do not typically organise training for individual participants or sell individual enrolments. If you are an individual planner looking to undertake our training, we encourage you to talk to your coordinator or management about bringing us into your workplace.

Alternatively, the Planning Institute of Australia‘s Victorian division does offer individual enrolments through its Planet training program. This includes some of our units.
