This short course is designed to encourage staff to reflect on the particular challenges of making good decisions in the Victorian system. In a system where sometimes it feels any decision is arguable, how do we make rigorous, accountable, logical and ethical decisions?
This session explores ways to think about the decision-making process, common pitfalls, and strategies to improve decision-making. This includes:
- The scope of valid decisions in the Victorian system – including the role of policy and discussion of the often misunderstood and misapplied National Trust Principle.
- Types of provisions and how they should be applied.
- How decision-makers of different abilities deal with complexity, and the role for heuristics in decision-making.
- Strategies for self-audit of decisions.
This can be optionally combined with the session on integrity in the planning system.
Presenter: Stephen Rowley.
Suggested timing: 2 hours (3 hours if the integrity session is included).
Mode: face to face.
Level: This course is targeted at council statutory planners at all levels of experience.
